For the July 4th fireworks, we walked up the hill a little ways behind our house in Point Loma to get a nice view of the fireworks. We found a nice little overlook that we had all to ourselves, and the clouds stayed high enough to not interview with the show.
I swam out with my camera yesterday at Tourmoline in San Diego to grab a few pictures of Corky Cullen on his new Cabrinha gear. Even though it was an average San Diego day (light wind, not much surf), Corky was still killing it.
Everything here done with a Canon 50D and Tokina 10-17 in an SPL housing.
Last night was the annual Ocean Beach Christmas Parade here in San Diego. Always a good/interesting time in OB! All images shot with a Canon 50D at ISO 1600-2000.
On Friday, I headed down to the Ocean Beach Pier in San Diego to take a few pictures of the large waves. It was high tide when I got there and waves were hitting the bottom of the pier. I shot from the pier for a few minutes before the lifeguards chased everyone off and closed it down.
I ended up getting to try out a GoPro Hero Wide camera, and I’m very impressed with the thing. Check out the video below.
My good friend Nate just got married last week. For awhile, Nate was the most dedicated windsurfer you could imagine. It’s hard to imagine that not long ago this guy was a shaggy-haired windsurfing/sailing instructor living on my couch in OB!

We walked down to Shelter Island last night to watch the San Diego fireworks show. This was my favorite photo from the evening.

I went for a paddle around Shelter Island in San Diego Bay on my stand up board the other day, and was almost back home when I noticed a really interesting boat. It was a 65′ long black boat that looked like a pirate ship, cannons and all. I cruised over for a closer look, and was quickly invited on board to warm up my feet and have a cocktail. What the hell, why not?
I ended up hanging out with the crew of the Buccaneer for hours. They were stopped in San Diego on their way to Costa Rica, where they were going to be using the boat for day charters and snorkel trips. The captain of this crew is Dan Catalano, who is an absolute character. This guy is a real life pirate. He has no intentions of coming back to the USA after this trip. Dan used to be a model and was, for a time, the Marlborough Man.

A few hours later, I decided it was time for me to get home, just a short paddle away. The pirates on the Buccaneer had got me so drunk I fell off my board three times before I got back to the beach near my house. The whole way everyone on the boat, who by this time were all wearing pirate outfits, cheered me on.
The next day, I stopped by to say hi and to make sure I hadn’t imagined the whole encounter. Everyone on the boat was waiting for someone to show up to teach them how to fire their cannons. The boat was gone a few days later, and I have no doubt that they are now somewhere off of Baja, firing cannons and partying their way to Costa Rica.

If you are there at the right time, the setting sun reflects off all the downtown San Diego buildings and makes the city glow.
